Van Cliburn Participant, Spencer Myer, Visits East Handley!

Students at East Handley Elementary experienced an extraordinary treat on May 19, 2009, when they were visited by a Van Cliburn Piano Competition participant.  The Cliburn Education foundation arranged for the East Handley student body to “adopt” Spencer Myer, an Ohio native, and, at age 30, the oldest participant in the renowned international competition.  In anticipation of his visit, the school, rolled out the red carpet (even if it was a paper carpet!) and the entire student body lined the sidewalks at the entrance to “clap” Mr. Myer into the building.  Many of the children held large, colorful welcome banners, and some waved U.S. flags.  The young pianist was obviously delighted by the reception!

Mr. Myer graciously played a mini-concert for the spellbound audience of fourth- and fifth-graders and took time to visit with the students about the music he chose to play.  At the conclusion of the concert, Mr. Myer was presented with an “angel-bear” – a gift from the East Handley Bears who promised to watch over his progress through the competition.  Mr. Myer next visited the school library, where he interacted with the children and addressed their many questions.  He was amused when asked by several students to autograph their hands.

Unfortunately, Mr. Myer did not advance to the second round of the prestigious competition.  However, during his brief visit to East Handley, he won the hearts of the students and staff, and perhaps fostered in some children a life-long interest in the study and performance of piano music.  It was certainly a day to remember for the young students and their teachers!
